Constipation is best prevented with a combination of exercise, a high-fibre diet, and an adequate intake of fluids.

Increase your fluid intake
- Aim for at least 2L of fluid daily

Increase your fibre intake
- by gradually incorporating more fruit, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds slowly
Our dietitian's recommend 1-2 extra pieces of vegetables across 3 days, then increase to 3 alongside 1 extra piece of fruit from what you are already consuming.
Some great suggestions to increase fibre through whole grains include oats, weetbix or All-Bran
- by gradually incorporating more fruit, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds slowly
- Exercise regularly
If your constipation is accompanied by any of the following symptoms, please seek immediate medical attention from your nearest Emergency Department: severe abdominal pain, swelling, distention or vomiting, blood in stool, persistent constipation despite treatment, vomit with bile (green or bright yellow in colour) or significant bleeding.
