Constipation

Constipation is best prevented with a combination of exercise, a high-fibre diet, and an adequate intake of fluids.

If your symptoms are not relieved with the below suggestions or they become a concern to you, please submit a request here, to speak to our medical support team of nurses and pharmacists who can provide further tailored advice to help you. 


  • Increase your fluid intake
    • Aim for at least 2L of fluid daily
  • Increase your fibre intake 
    • by gradually incorporating more fruit, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds slowly
      Our dietitian's recommend 1-2 extra pieces of vegetables across 3 days, then increase to 3 alongside 1 extra piece of fruit from what you are already consuming.
      Some great suggestions to increase fibre through whole grains include oats, weetbix or All-Bran
  • Exercise regularly

If your constipation is accompanied by any of the following symptoms, please seek immediate medical attention from your nearest Emergency Department: severe abdominal pain, swelling, distention or vomiting, blood in stool, persistent constipation despite treatment, vomit with bile (green or bright yellow in colour) or significant bleeding.
